The Silence of Calvary: A Book Review

Are you looking for a resource for the adults in your congregation that has flexibility in use throughout Lent into Holy Week? The Silence of Calvary: Meditations on Good Friday should find a way onto your list. Church Publishing Incorporated provided us with this review copy, and I am glad to have it come across my desk.

This resource is organized around silence; specifically, how silence interplays with the motivations and actions of those at Calvary, the people, the disciples, Mary, Jesus, God, and the tomb. In a world that is increasingly loud, the invitation to examine silence and what it has to teach us is restorative. This resource will help affirm what you know about the events, spur you to wonder about motivations, and lead you to see how you can use these to help you grow deeper roots of your faith.

Do you have a group of adults that enjoy studying together? Check out this resource. Do you have people that like to spend time at home with a guide and process the readings and personal questions that arise in a group? This could be a great fit. Are you working with a group that is looking to incorporate more active silence into their lives? Excerpts from this resource could be a wonderful place to start. It would not take too much preparation for  you to use the chapters for conversation questions in a closed Facebook group of fellow studiers. But don’t limit its use to Holy Week! I would use it throughout Lent and continue the conversations about silence throughout the rest of the liturgical year.

A review copy of this book was provided by the publisher.

This is a collection that I would be happy to read through in one sitting, but like a chocolate layer cake, I know that taking my time to savor each poem, referring to the Scripture references, and reflecting is even better.
